Tips for Dispensary First-Timers
If you’ve never shopped in a dispensary before, there are a few things you’ll need to bring with you. First, make sure you have your unexpired, state-issued form of identification like your driver’s license or passport. We’re required by law to verify the age of everyone who comes to shop regardless of how old you think you look. We think you look amazing, by the way!
Cash is king, so the saying goes. Bring either cash or a debit card because credit cards can’t be accepted for cannabis purchases. There are ATMs inside every Dunegrass location for your convenience. Note that a service fee may apply to debit cards and ATM withdrawals.
When you enter the dispensary, someone will check you in and then you’ll be led into the sales area of the store. If it’s your first time, you’ll probably be a little overwhelmed at the diverse selection of products available. Don’t worry; that’s where your budtender comes in.
Speaking of the sales floor, you’ll want to have a look around to see that it’s well lit and stocked. If you’re buying marijuana flower (buds), you’ll want to know if you can see, and more importantly, smell the product. Improperly cured buds will sometimes smell like hay, while fresh buds will have a much more complex scent and tones ranging from fruity to gassy.

1. What product are you excited about right now?
Budtenders are usually cannabis fans themselves. Ask what they’re buying on payday; it’s usually a great recommendation! Our expert Grasstenders are all familiar with the products we carry and love to talk about it!
2. What’s the freshest flower in the store?
Fresh product tends to have better flavor, aroma, and overall experience. In Michigan, all products are required to have testing dates on them. If the dispensary can’t or won’t show you the label, that’s a big red flag! THC degrades over time, so look for products tested within the last 6 months for a better experience.
3. I’m brand new. What’s a good starting dose?
This is especially important if you’re considering edibles or tinctures. Everyone’s tolerance is different, and a low and slow approach is always smart. For most new users, 2-5mg THC edibles seem to be the right starting dose. Flower, concentrates, and vapes are more difficult to dose, so remember go low and slow!
